05.09 \ Queer and Nation \ discussion

A rainbow flag featured in a recent rally nationalist rally protesting the removal of a memorial plaque to a dubious WWII figure.
The organisers put a rainbow flag alongside the star of David on their rally poster, suggesting that both represented efforts to smear Lithuanian national heroes.

Why, in nationalist discourse, are LGBT people held to be enemies of the nation rather than part of it?
To what extent do nationalists exploit homophobia to their ends? What is the situation in the neighbouring countries and our region?

Discussion participants:
prof. Dovile Jakniunaite (Vilnius Universty);
Vuk Vukotić (Institute of the Lithuanian Language, and Vilnius University);
Marta Bednarczyk (European Foundation of Human Rights).

Moderator: Jūratė Juškaitė (“Kreivės”, and Lithuanian Centre for Human Rights).

The discussion is held in English, after the screening of Kreivės Shorts (to start at 5.00 p.m.).
