Penthouse

2021 / Norway / disaster, drama

Directors: Vegard Dahle, Line Klungseth Johansen
Cast: Eirik Hallert, Vebjørn Enger
Norwegian, with English and Lithuanian subtitles, 20 min

A couple can’t agree on whether they’re drowning or not. On the surface, it is a story about a man desperately trying to ignore the problems right in front of him. Instead of dealing with his dissatisfied boyfriend and the apocalypse, he distracts himself by trying to create a future for the two of them.

His evasive behaviour mirrors how the people of Western societies deal with climate change. We cling to meaningless symbolic gestures like buying reusable straws and locally sourced beef. We sign petitions and buy climate credits, but deep down we all know that we have to fundamentally change our lifestyle to create a sustainable future.
