Franz Biberkopf, a former fair showman, currently an unemployed proletarian, is picked up by an art dealer who introduces him to a group of homosexuals. Here Franz meets Eugen, the son of an industrialist – his great love. Eugen and Franz move into a flat together for the unemployed man has won a minor fortune in the lottery and pays for everything the industrialist’s son suggests.
However, the class differences cannot be overcome with money alone. Franz is still exploited. He suffers every humiliation, does not rebel against his exploitation and believes in love – until his money runs out and Eugen’s love cools.
