Another Way

Hungary, 1958. The country is under a repressive communist regime. Two reporters at a state-run newspaper are fighting for free speech. Eva wants to expose the truth about abuse against workers at a collective farm. Livia and Eva fall in love, but risk tragic consequences if their secret affair comes to light. The first Hungarian film depicting homosexuality sympathetically, it drew parallels between political and sexual oppression that broke many taboos of the time. Equally scandalously, the film reflects on the effects of the 1956 uprising. Government censors demanded changes to the script but the film came out as originally intended and screened at Cannes, where Jadwiga Jankowska-Cieslak won the best actress award.

The film will be presented by Jasmina Šepetavc, a researcher at the Centre for Cultural and Religious Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana. She holds a PhD in Gender Studies. Her research interests include film, popular music, feminist and queer theory. She has written on film and other topics for various publications and works as a film critic and programmer.
